Troubling statistics

Dans la rue knows all too well the risk of youth who are aging out of care becoming unhoused. Nearly half of those who use our programs and services have spent at least some time in the youth protection system while they were growing up. The numbers speak for themselves: one out of three youth is at risk of experiencing an episode of homelessness in the three years following their transition out of the system. Urgent action is required to turn this trend around.

Working together to keep youth from falling into homelessness

Ministers Carmant and Rouleau are joining forces to expand access to housing for youth aging out of care. The Rent Supplement Program is one of the mechanisms that will be used to help keep high-risk youth from becoming unhoused. But preventing homelessness takes more than putting a roof over people’s heads: psychosocial support is also a critical.

That is why organizations that specialize in preventing youth homelessness are being asked to lend their expertise to the government. Dans la rue is one of these organizations and will step up to help turn things around. For more than 35 years, Dans la rue has been working to prevent youth homelessness through a series of concrete solutions, such as support programs for 18-to-25-year-olds who have been in care, to help put them on a path toward an independent future.
