The findings of a new study from the Chaire-réseau de recherche sur la jeunesse du Québec on the health of young adults aging out of youth protection were published. The study was led by Martin Goyette, a professor with the École nationale d’administration publique.
Some telling statistics:
- 18-year-olds exiting the youth protection system make 10 times more use of mental health and psychiatric services than youth in the general population.
- Youth between the ages of 18 and 20 who are experiencing homelessness make 40 times more use of mental health services than youth in the general population.
- Six times as many youth in the youth protection system consult a psychiatrist compared to those in the general population.
These statistics support the observations made on the ground by the counsellors at Dans la rue who remain committed to preventing youth from becoming entrenched in homelessness. Helping those who are transitioning out of youth protection is important work and a daily priority for Dans la rue.
