Olivier helps young people reconnect with their bodies
Olivier, who joined Dans la rue two years ago, provides at-risk youth much-needed respite from the daily challenges they face. His unique approach and energy make him an indispensable member of the second-line team.
The activities Olivier facilitates are a gentle way for young people to start taking care of themselves.
“Through sports, physical and mental wellness practices, outings, and therapeutic care like massage and acupuncture, young people can lower their stress levels and naturally boost dopamine and serotonin without putting themselves in danger,” he explains.
Many young people who come to Dans la rue end up adopting healthier lifestyle habits. Olivier recalls one young man who reduced his cannabis consumption and began eating well and working out regularly. Others participate in wellness days and enjoy smaller victories that show them that self-improvement is within their grasp.
Substance use and the daily struggle for survival can cause homeless and at-risk youth to disconnect from their bodies. However, with Olivier’s help, they gradually rediscover the benefits of self-care. Olivier often hears comments like, “I was completely out of touch with my body. It felt good to take care of myself — I didn’t think I could.” To him, such realizations are a sure sign of success.
“When young people tune in to their bodies and decide to take care of themselves, I see it as a small victory.”
These stories prove that the right support can empower young people to make positive changes in their lives. And every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory worth celebrating. Olivier’s work at Dans la rue is pivotal in allowing young people to find a renewed sense of hope and face the future with optimism.
