A moment of joy, compassion and community spirit
A Celebration Intertwined with the Story of Pops
At Dans la rue, St. Patrick’s Day is no ordinary day. It’s a reminder of the origins of our late founder, Father Emmett “Pops” Johns, who was born in Montreal in 1928 to Irish parents.
Pops grew up in an environment where a sense of community and human connection was essential, which undoubtedly influenced his future path.
The St. Patrick’s Day parade: A symbol of unity and hope
Marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade is a symbolic gesture for Dans la rue. It ties us to Pops’ heritage and to the warm, welcoming and inclusive spirit of this celebration. And it emphasizes that the youth served by Dans la rue, along with our teams and volunteers, have a legitimate place in the Montreal community.
Comments from people in the parade crowd
“Thank you for your work. I’m a monthly donor, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do!”
– A parade spectator
“Can I walk with you in honor of Pops? He helped me when I was younger. I met him through La Roulotte.”
– Nancy, spectator and former user of Dans la rue’s services
These testimonials reflect the essence of Pops’ mission: reaching out to youth in vulnerable situations and giving them a place where they feel safe and welcome, whether it’s when times get tough or during a special celebration.
A legacy that continues to inspire
Even a a fond reminder of the origins fter Pops passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, his legacy has continued to guide our organization.
Every year, St. Patrick’s Day is an opportunity to honour his life’s work and shine a light on Dans la rue’s steadfast commitment to youth — standing together and inspired by the spirit of inclusion and compassion he embraced so wholeheartedly.
