Emmett-Johns School: an alternative school that restores hope

Learning to rebuild through school

When you arrive at the Day Center, it’s hard to imagine that a school is hidden inside. Yet, on the second floor is the Emmett-Johns School classroom.

This light-filled room is set up like a real classroom, with a chalkboard, lockers, desks, and chairs. Every day of the week, it welcomes a varying number of young people, up to a maximum of 18 students.

A school unlike any other

Affiliated with the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM), this alternative school offers math, French, and English courses, just like any other high school. The difference lies in its approach. Here, listening and kindness take precedence over performance. Students progress at their own pace, with a customized schedule and a much more flexible curriculum.

Thanks to the commitment of the teaching staff and tutors, as well as the psychosocial support available on site, students regain confidence, surpass themselves, and complete their high school or certificate with pride.

Nearly 30 years of success

Founded at the same time as the Day Center in 1997, this street school has been providing a safe and inspiring space for nearly 30 years where young people can believe in their abilities again and envision a future full of hope.

It also held a special place in Pops’ heart, who saw it as much more than a place of learning: a real springboard for restoring confidence and opening up new horizons.
