a moment of joy, compassion, and solidarity
A celebration deeply rooted in Pops’ history
At Dans la rue, St. Patrick’s Day is no ordinary celebration. It reminds our community of the origins of the organization’s founder, Father Emmett Johns—known as “Pops”—who was born in Montreal in 1928 to Irish parents.
Pops grew up in an environment where a sense of community and solidarity was essential, which certainly contributed to his vocation.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade: A Symbol of Unity and Hope
Dans la rue’s participation in the St. Patrick’s Day parade holds symbolic significance. It connects the organization to Pops’ legacy, as well as to the inclusive, warm, and unifying spirit of this celebration. It serves as a reminder that the young people supported by Dans la rue, along with the staff and volunteers, have a rightful place in the Montreal community.
Comments from people in the parade crowd
“Thank you for your work. I’m a monthly donor, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do!”
– A parade spectator
“Can I walk with you in honor of Pops? He helped me when I was younger. I met him through La Roulotte.”
– Nancy, spectator and former user of Dans la rue’s services
These testimonials capture the very essence of Pops’ mission: reaching out to vulnerable young people and offering them a safe and welcoming space—both in difficult times and during celebrations.
A Legacy That Continues to Inspire
Even after Pops passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, his legacy continues to guide Dans la rue’s daily work.
Every year, St. Patrick’s Day offers a special opportunity to honor this legacy and to reaffirm the organization’s unwavering commitment to young people, in a spirit of inclusion, compassion, and solidarity.
