One-on-one support

Jessica Nadeau of Le Devoir recently spoke with 19-year-old Cathy, a former client of Dans la rue. Cathy came to the Day Centre one day on the recommendation of one of our counsellors and found out about Emmett Johns School, where youth can complete their secondary education in a warm, welcoming environment and at a pace that works for them. The school also offers music and art programs as well as administrative and psychosocial support. This personalized, holistic approach helps youth stay focused on their studies, eases their transition to adulthood and equips them with the tools they need to integrate into the workforce and society.

“It’s not young people who are getting a second chance — we’re the ones getting a second chance to prove that school can work for them. It’s up to us to adapt.”

– Sylvie Cormier, Social Integration Services Coordinator

A school that encourages youth to look to the future with passion and purpose

There are currently five students benefiting from this one-on-one approach at the Emmett Johns School. In the familiar environment of Dans la rue, they are able to put aside their day-to-day worries for a while and simply be who they are, without fear of judgment. The support they receive gives them the hope they need to dream of a brighter future.
