Sophie: Discovering a New Community

During National Volunteer Week (April 19–25), we will be shining the spotlight on a few of Dans la rue’s 129 dedicated, hard-working volunteers. Join us throughout the week as we take a closer look at the invaluable role these individuals play.

The power of “we”

Sophie Guérin has been a volunteer at Dans la rue since 2018. Through her commitment, kindness and genuinely human approach, she exemplifies the power of community.

As her own children would readily tell you, her maternal instinct runs deep. She felt a calling to do something tangible for young people in need.

“I got involved out of a desire to help these kids, but I found much more than a place to volunteer — I found a whole new community”

This sense of community spirit has been nurtured by the people she has met, what she has learned and the trust that has developed.

Over the years, her regular shifts at the Day Centre cafeteria have become a cherished part of her routine. Now semi-retired, she comes in every Thursday with her husband to lend a hand in the kitchen. They feel strongly that you’re never too old to chip in — and doing it with someone else can be a wonderful experience.

Taking her support to the next level

In addition to her culinary contributions, Sophie wanted to make a difference in other ways. This prompted her to come up with an initiative aimed at young job seekers — which she developed with her son. Through one-on-one coaching over several months, she helps vulnerable youth write their résumé, prepare for interviews and gain a better overall understanding of the job market.

The approach is highly structured, but it is also rooted in a deeply human connection.

“Sometimes, supporting a young person is about being a steady presence when they need one most”

She gets emotional when describing what she finds most rewarding about her experience: the relationships that slowly take shape, the shared smiles, the feeling of mutual respect and the sense of community that blossoms with time.

Her experience has only confirmed what she already believed:

“Volunteers get as much out of giving as the people they are there to help.”

Sophie’s story is sincere and inspiring, showing that giving back to the community can grow and flourish over the years and become something truly meaningful for youth, volunteers and the entire community.
