Volunteering at Dans la rue

Please note that all of our volunteers must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 or older: Because our volunteers are in direct contact with youth and may encounter situations that are sensitive in nature, we have a mandatory age requirement in place for legal and safety reasons.
  • Fluent in French and English: A large part of a volunteer’s role will be to listen. Given that we cater to both French- and English-speaking youth, it is important that volunteers are able to converse in both languages.
  • Police check: We have a strict policy about performing background checks on everyone who volunteers at Dans la rue on a regular basis, given that we work with a vulnerable population. Volunteers cannot start until the results of their background check have been approved. This process can take up to three months.
  • Minimum one-year commitment: This is to ensure a level of consistency and stability in the services we provide to young people who have typically been deprived of both in their lives.

Please note that we hold two volunteer recruiting drives a year: one in the spring and one in the fall. We keep all the applications received in between on file and contact candidates in as timely a manner as possible to establish initial contact and to invite them to a mandatory information and orientation meeting with the volunteer supervisor. Please bear in mind that the entire process, from application to integration into our family of volunteers, can take several months and should therefore not be taken lightly.
