Dans la rue in Le Devoir: Youth homelessness, an invisible scourge

Youth Homelessness: A Social Issue We Can’t Ignore

Far from the stereotypes, youth homelessness is often invisible. But it’s very real — and it concerns us all.

On September 6, Le Devoir published a powerful article titled “Youth Homelessness: An Invisible Crisis.” It revealed that half of all people experiencing homelessness in Canada are under the age of 25, and 40% experience their first episode before the age of 16. These numbers are striking, but they only tell part of the story.

A Hidden Reality

Unlike the image we often associate with homelessness — someone sleeping on the street — youth homelessness takes more discreet forms: couch surfing, sleeping in cars, or staying in unstable or temporary housing. This invisibility makes the issue harder to track, understand, and address.

Rooted in Systemic Issues

Youth homelessness is not a choice. It’s often the result of a chain of vulnerabilities:

  • family breakdown,
  • child welfare involvement,
  • mental health challenges,
  • poverty,
  • discrimination, especially against LGBTQ+ youth.

These young people often find themselves without a safety net at a critical point in their development.

Our Role

At Dans la rue, we believe every young person deserves a future. That’s why we offer comprehensive support: emergency shelter, psychosocial services, access to basic needs, art workshops, housing support, and more.

We work to prevent homelessness by helping youth build autonomy, rebuild trust, and envision a future for themselves.

A Collective Responsibility

Youth homelessness is a societal issue. It won’t be solved with temporary fixes, but through sustained collective action. As a citizen, donor, policymaker, or ally, you have a role to play.
