30% of the youth we serve identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.
Did you know…?
- 2SLGBTQIA+ youth are two to three times more likely than their non-2SLGBTQIA+ peers to experience one or more episodes of homelessness.
- The homeless or at-risk 2SLGBTQIA+ youth we work with are at a greater risk of discrimination, rejection from family members and violence as a result of their sexual orientation or gender expression.
- The 2SLGBTQIA+ youth who come to Dans la rue hail from a wide variety of social, ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and experiences (refugees, Indigenous peoples, young parents, etc.).
Our support services for 2SLGBTQIA+ young people
Emergency shelter for trans, transitioning and non-binary youth
There is a gender-neutral room available at our Bunker emergency shelter to accommodate trans, transitioning and non-binary youth.
The age limit for admittance to the Bunker was raised to 26 for trans youth in recognition of the difficulties they face in finding resources suited to their needs.
2SLGBTQIA+ lunches
At the Day Centre, we hold 2SLGBTQIA+ lunches every second Wednesday, as well as activities where participants are free to express their gender and feel safe and supported (trans support group, activities and workshops focused on gender identity and expression, etc.).
Services adapted to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
At Dans la rue, our services are a safer, inclusive, welcoming and judgment-free space for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Our staff receive ongoing training on how to inform and guide the members of our community on 2SLGBTQIA+ matters.
We also provide referrals to physical and mental health professionals to support 2SLGBTQIA+ youth on their journey.
