A distinction for reducing our environmental impact

Dans la rue Roulotte

On May 4, Dans la rue received a Novae award in the social impact category for the Van, which is powered entirely by renewable natural gas (RNG). A total of 20 leading-edge Quebec-based projects were singled out for recognition at these 9th annual awards, which celebrate outstanding achievement in social and environmental sustainability.

This honour is a testament to the innovative nature of this solution embraced by Dans la rue to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. By using a vehicle fuelled by RNG instead of diesel, Dans la rue will be shrinking greenhouse gas emissions by 2 tonnes, or 20%. It will also be cutting costs to the tune of about $3,000.

The interior of the Van has been redesigned to accommodate more equipment, improve the functionality of the work counters and make the entire space more user-friendly. As a result of these modifications, the vehicle can serve more vulnerable youth and do so even more efficiently.

The Van connecting with homeless young people for over 34 years

The iconic Dans la rue Van has been travelling through the streets of downtown Montreal for 34 years to connect with homeless youth and other vulnerable individuals. Staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers, the Van provides food, basic necessities and a welcoming, judgment-free environment. This mobile outreach service is an important step in building trust with the youth served by Dans la rue.

The new and more environmentally friendly Van is powered by the ALDO Group, Énergir and the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation, with additional support from a number of generous partners.
